Mezcal Marca Negra
Marca Negra is a selection of high quality mezcal from the best regions of Mexico, where it is bottled and masterfully distilled by hand. We locate the best traditional mezcal, wherever it may be found, however remote the producer may be located. If a worthy expression of traditional mezcal is to be found in the most remote village – be it in the Oaxacan Sierra, or the desert of Durango – we will go there to make and available for you in its true, original form.
Our bottles display specific information on their label, such as the type of agave it is made of. Marca Negra is always 100% pure agave and the alcoholic volume is above 45%. Another important consideration is the region your mezcal comes from as well as the name of the maestro who distilled it - which we always provide on each bottle.
Marca Negra is careful to provide a benefit to the people that produce mezcal, as well as to educate the consumer about the use, role, and customs that revolve around mezcal in traditional indigenous communities around Mexico. After all, only thanks to these hard-working friends can we readily enjoy the fascinating spirit that comes from the heart of their lands and the skill and strength of their hands. Every bottle of Marca Negra Mezcal you purchase honours their work and helps to preserve the tradition of mezcal.
Marca Negra Espadín
100% estate-grown Agave angustifolia averaging 8-10 years of age, double-distilled in copper pot stills by maestro mezcalero Isaias Martinez Juan after traditional fire-pit roasting and stone crushing in San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca, bottled at 50.2% ABV. Clean and fresh aromas of very ripe fruit followed a by smoldering fruit and a wood fire; rich milky sweetness, a lemony zing and a clean, delightful finish.
Awards: Distiller.com – 92 points "An interesting bouquet, with fresh agave, mint, peaches, herbs and athletic tape. A hint of a medicinal, smoky quality wafts in the air. On the palate, an initial wave of sweet agave gives way to white pepper, then cooked agave, with an undertone of baked fruit. Freshly zested lime peel is next, the flavors coming so fast that it almost feels like a rollercoaster ride. Things finish off with a note reminiscent of campfire embers, and a hint of graham cracker peeking through the smoke."
Marca Negra Tobalá
100% wild-harvested Agave potatorum averaging 10-14 years of age, double-distilled in copper pot stills by maestro mezcalero Jorge Méndez Ramirez after traditional fire-pit roasting and stone crushing in San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca, bottled at 50% ABV. Smoked chiles and a sugar cane sweetness emerge first from this muscular mezcal, succeeded by a bit of brine; the flavours are rich with over-ripe fruit and a sweet sootiness characteristic of classic mezcal. Finishes briny and assertive.
Awards: Distiller.com – 93 points "Like all good tobalá mezcals it is rich, briny and sweet. The nose is loaded with caramel, mustard, saltwater, walnut shells, mustard, and a hint of apple cider vinegar. It has a rich, decadent body and displays a myriad of flavors such as brown sugar, lemon pith, caramel, strawberries, and chalk and grape skins. It leaves a slight tannic drying sensation on the sides of the mouth but is all-in-all quite alluring."
Marca Negra Dobadán
100% wild-harvested Agave rhodacantha averaging 8-12 years of age, double-distilled in copper pot stills by maestro mezcalero Alberto Ortiz after traditional fire-pit roasting & wooden mallet crushing by hand in Santa Maria de la Pila, Miahuatlan, Oaxaca, 47.7% ABV. Tastes of cooked agave with hints of molasses & brown sugar, green herbs & grapefruit rind. The subtle smoky flavor gives way to a sweet & spicy finish.
Awards: Distiller.com – 93 points "Notes of agave, white pepper, grapefruit peel and green pepper appear on the nose. On the palate, this enters surprisingly mild, with a soft agave and piloncillo sugar note, with a touch of white pepper and molasses. It then erupts into a haze of herbal smoke, with cooked ancho chile, bitter herbs, and lemon peel before finishing with a medicinal, lozenge-like note. If a shaman's house burned down, this is what the air would likely smell like. This is a complex and challenging mezcal, yet one that delivers flavor in spades."
Marca Negra Tepeztate
100% wild-harvested Agave marmorata averaging 25-30 years of age, double-distilled in copper pot stills by maestro mezcalero Jorge Méndez Ramirez after traditional fire-pit roasting and stone crushing in San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca, bottled at 47.3% ABV. Damp earth, sweet mouldy entry of medium permanence. Mild smoked chipotle and fresh asparagus. Lemon peel and pomegranate give way to a medium strength clove and white pepper finish.
Awards: Distiller.com – 87 points "Here's a mezcal that truly tastes of the earth, with an intense minerality. Green peppers, grass and wild chive underlie a rich smokiness akin to peat smoke. Hot chili pepper and citrus add further complexity, lasting into the long, lingering spicy/smoky finish."
Marca Negra Ensemble
100% agave blended from espadín (Agave angustifolia), madrecuishe and bicuishe (Agave karwinskii vars.) averaging 9-14 years of age, double-distilled in copper pot stills by maestro mezcalero Alberto Ortiz after traditional fire-pit roasting & wooden mallet crushing by hand in Santa Maria de la Pila, Miahuatlan, Oaxaca, 48.1% ABV. Semisweet entry showing citrus and yellow plum, cinnamon touches, clove and white pepper, and a lovely floral finish. A well-balanced mezcal with a subtle touch of smoke.
Awards: Distiller.com – 91 points "This unaged mezcal is highly aromatic: campfire, pine needles, pineapple, roasted oranges and fresh earth. Bright herbal flavors of sweet grass, white pepper and juniper, are quite lively aromatically and on the palate. The first taste is hot but pleasantly so with gobs of sweet honey and roasted figs with the earth and smoke. Lots of layers to discover. Long warm sweet finish that keeps me coming back for more."
